What you see at Leiden City Hall
The 1597 façade with its steps, bell tower and sculpture is the most photographed part of the Breestraat. Behind it, the Stadhuisplein opens onto the water.
The history of Leiden City Hall
A 1929 fire destroyed everything behind the façade; the front wall survived and became the starting point for the rebuild. The inscription above the door recalls the siege of 1574.
Visiting Leiden City Hall: practical tips
The building is open on weekdays for city business and weddings; the façade, of course, is always there. From here it is five minutes to the Pieterskerk or the market.
